Literacy is important for all students, and should be incorporated into all subject areas, and not just be the responsibility of English teachers. Literacy is critical for all students to lead successful lives, both in and after school.
Literacy can be incorporated into any lesson, in more obvious ways, as well as more subtle ways. It is rare you will make it through a lesson without students having to read or write something...this is literacy. What is important is ensuring you keep helping your students to improve their skills. The activities below are just a few examples of the more obvious ways in which literacy can be incorporated into science lessons. |
Activity oneA Stage 5 task which has students write a scientific explanation on the formation of black holes. The theory for writing a scientific explanation could be applied to any unit of work.
|
activity TwoA Stage 5 task, where students read an article on the evidence that supported the idea plate tectonics, and then answer a series of questions to check for comprehension of the text.
|
activity ThreeA Stage 5 task, where students complete a cloze passage activity on the life cycle of stars. Students are provided with a word bank to help them through the task.
