Writing a scientific explanationThe ability to explain phenomena by determining how or why they occur is a fundamental aspect of science. In order for scientists to explain phenomena or develop new scientific claims, they must provide evidence and reasons to justify those claims, and convince other scientists and the public of the validity of those claims. Students need to be able to understand and critically evaluate scientific explanations they see in newspapers, magazines, and on the news to be scientific literate citizens and help them be able to make informed decisions. Not only should they be able to critically read explanations, they should be able to write their own explanations to provide evidence, and support and justify their own ideas or claims through scientific inquiry.
